Washington, DC - The National Institutes of Health has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fund five new research centers to improve health in communities overburdened by pollution and other environmental factors that contribute to health disparities. Within each center, scientists will partner with community organizations to study these concerns and develop culturally appropriate ways to reduce exposure to harmful environmental conditions.

Rochester, Minnesota - The gene that makes bacteria highly resistant to a last-resort class of antibiotics is in the U.S. A report published in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy says the colistin-resistant mcr-1 E. coli has been discovered in a woman in Pennsylvania. Colistin, introduced in the 1950s, is used to treat multidrug resistant bacterial infections known as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).

Rochester, Minnesota - Surrogate endpoints used to support the majority of new cancer drugs approved in the U.S. often lack formal study, according to the authors of a study published in the June issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. This analysis questions whether the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is adhering to standards that demand that surrogates be “reasonably likely to predict” or “established” to be used to grant approvals.

Washington, DC - CDC is working with other public health officials to monitor for ongoing Zika virus transmission. Today, CDC posted a Zika virus travel notice for Argentina. Local transmission of Zika virus infection (Zika) has been reported in Tucumán Province, Argentina. CDC has issued travel notices (level 2, “practice enhanced precautions”) for people traveling to destinations with Zika.

Imperial, California - With summer fast approaching, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith reminds Californians to avoid mosquito bites during travel to Latin American countries and the Caribbean. There have been increased reports of mosquito-borne diseases, including Zika, chikungunya, and dengue, in those locations. Dr. Smith also reminded pregnant women to consider postponing travel to destinations affected by Zika virus.
