Washington, DC - Ghiringhelli Specialty Foods, Inc., a Vallejo, California, establishment, is recalling approximately 2,444 pounds of poultry products due to mislabeling and undeclared allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The products contain soy, wheat, and fish (anchovies), known allergens which are not declared on the product label. Additionally, the Caesar Salad products usually have the statement “May Contain Traces of Shellfish.” This statement is missing on the recalled products.

Rochester, Minnesota - Mayo Clinic is highlighting the potential merits of using precision medicine in prescribing antidepressants. Details appear in the current issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Eleven percent of Americans 12 years and older have been prescribed antidepressant medication, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data from 2005–2008. These medications are regularly prescribed in psychiatric, pediatric, adolescent, family and general medicine clinics nationwide.

Sacramento, California - California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith today issued a health advisory related to an outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease occurring in Southern California, primarily among adult gay and bisexual men. Meningococcal disease is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis and can cause meningitis and bloodstream infections (sepsis). Although rare, meningococcal disease is serious and potentially fatal.
