Newark, New Jersey - An Afghanistan citizen and United States Lawful Permanent Resident was indicted Friday for his role in a scheme to smuggle undocumented aliens from Afghanistan to the United States. 

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - The former Sheriff of Philadelphia John Green, 72, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was sentenced Thursday to serve five years in prison followed by one year of supervised release, and ordered to forfeit $76,581 by U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Washington, DC - The Department of Justice announced Thursday that Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation (Nissan MAC) has agreed to pay $3 million to resolve allegations that it violated the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). The suit alleges that Nissan MAC repossessed 113 vehicles owned by SCRA-protected servicemembers without first obtaining the required court orders, and failed to refund up-front capitalized cost reduction (CCR) amounts to servicemembers who lawfully terminated their motor vehicle leases early after receiving military orders.

Washington, DC - The Department of Justice Wednesday announced that on July 31, the Madoff Victim Fund (MVF) began its fourth distribution of $469.6 million in funds forfeited to the U.S. Government in connection with the Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC (BLMIS) fraud scheme, bringing the total distributed to $2.4 billion to nearly 32,000 victims worldwide.  In this distribution, payments will be sent to over 25,000 victims across the globe, bringing their total recovery to 66.85 percent.  This distribution represents the fourth in a series of payments that will eventually return over $4 billion to victims as compensation for losses they suffered from the collapse of the BLMIS.  The MVF has received over 65,000 petitions from victims in 136 countries.
