Children's Fears After Unsettling Experiences

Rochester, Minnesota - A few months ago my 12-year-old daughter and I were on a flight that had significant turbulence, which was really upsetting for her. Since then, she has had nightmares about the flight and has told me almost daily that she will never fly again. We have a wedding coming up that will require us to fly, and she insists that she will not go. What can I say to her that will help calm her fears? Should I have her evaluated by a psychologist?

Rochester, Minnesota - For many children, the start of a new school year can be stressful, especially if they've been victims of bullying in the past. Mayo Clinic Children's Center psychologist Dr. Bridget Biggs says parents and caregivers should know the warning signs. "If your child is reluctant to go to school, stressed after spending time online or avoids social situations, he or she may be being bullied." Dr. Biggs points out that consequences of bullying can be serious. She says victims are at increased risk of depression, anxiety, sleep problems, self-harm, poor grades and in rare cases, suicide.

Los Angeles, California - Thirty-three defendants were charged as part of a sweep targeting criminal activity that has victimized the United States Postal Service (USPS) and its customers. Most of the defendants charged as part of the sweep are USPS employees who allegedly stole mail, embezzled from the agency or, in one case, failed to deliver nearly 50,000 pieces of mail.
