Washington, DC - The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics announced today a series of commitments, a new report and a set of education data plans outlining the Obama Administration's work to improve the lives of the 55 million Hispanics who live in the United States, whether through increased access to high-quality early learning and STEM education, more grants to Hispanic-serving colleges, more opportunities to participate in the internships or greater apprenticeships with small businesses.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson traveled to Philadelphia to review the operational security and contingency planning in preparation for Pope Francis’ visit next week. Secretary Johnson has designated the Pope’s visit as a National Special Security Event (NSSE), which allows for enhanced cooperation of local, state and federal partners in establishing a safe and secure environment.

Washington, DC - USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and Environmental Protection Agency Deputy Administrator Stan Meiburg have announced the United States’ first-ever national food waste reduction goal, calling for a 50-percent reduction by 2030. As part of the effort, the federal government will lead a new partnership with charitable organizations; faith-based organizations; the private sector; and local, state and tribal governments to reduce food loss and waste in order to improve overall food security and conserve our nation’s natural resources.

Washington, DC - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today the appointment of Karla Thieman as Chief of Staff for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The position was recently vacated by Brian Baenig.
