Imperial Valley, California - Customs and Border Protection officers at the Andrade port of entry Monday detained a man after discovering 2,284 prescription Xanax pills stashed inside his underwear.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on April 14, when a CBP officer encountered a 44-year-old U.S. citizen after he arrived at the port in a vehicle. The officer referred the man and his vehicle for a more in-depth inspection.
During the inspection process, an officer noticed a large bulge under the man’s clothing and escorted him to a secure area for further investigation. A search of the man revealed multiple bags containing 2,284 Xanax pills and three vials of testosterone concealed in the man’s groin area, inside his underwear.
The pills have an approximate value of about $16,000.
Deputies with the Imperial County Sherriff’s Office arrested the man, a resident of Ontario, Calif., and transported him to the Imperial County Jail to await arraignment.
“It is imperative for travelers to understand there is a price to pay for failing to declare or attempting to smuggle medications, agriculture products, alcohol and other items,” said Andrade Port Director, David Sarrasin. “Travelers face stiff civil penalties or possible criminal prosecution for failing to declare items at a U.S. port or entry.”
