Calexico CBP Officers Stop Attempt to Smuggle 1,620 Pounds of Marijuana Inside Utility Trailer

Calexico, California - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Calexico downtown port of entry on Sunday arrested a San Diego man and woman after discovering about 1,620 pounds of marijuana concealed in the trailer they were towing.

The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m., on August 15, when CBP officers encountered a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup towing an enclosed utility trailer, driven by a 34-year-old male and his 49-year-old passenger.

During the inspection, a CBP narcotics detector dog alerted to the interior of the trailer, leading officers to the discovery of 86 wrapped bundles concealed within the roof.

The bundles were extracted and field-tested positive as marijuana, with an estimated street value of almost $730,000.

The vehicle’s two occupants were arrested and turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations agents for further processing.

They were later transported to the Imperial County Jail to await arraignment.

CBP seized the pickup, trailer and drugs.
