California Woman Arrested for Smuggling Meth

Nogales, Arizona - A 37-year-old woman from Fresno, California, was arrested Monday for attempting to smuggle more than $123,000 worth of methamphetamine through the Dennis DeConcini Port.

Customs and Border Protection officers selected Maria Veronica Martinez for an additional inspection of her Dodge sedan when she attempted to enter the United States. After a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs, an officer found a single package with approximately eight pounds of methamphetamine wrapped around the woman’s midsection.

The drugs and vehicle were processed for seizure. Martinez was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

Individuals arrested may be charged by complaint, the method by which a person is charged with criminal activity, which raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent unless and until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
