Cathedral City, California - The National Democratic Municipal Officials (DMO) organization has named Cathedral City Council Member Greg Pettis as its DMO (Democratic Municipal Official) of the Year. Also receiving the award was Charlotte, NC City Council Member James Mitchell, Jr.
Recent honorees include Mayor Cindy Lerner of Pinecrest, Florida (2011) who was just elected national Chairwoman of DMO, and Mayor Henrietta Davis of Cambridge, MA (2010). In selecting the Democratic Municipal Official of the Year, the organization considers the contribution the individual has made to the organization, and more importantly, the work they have done in their own community and at the national level that has raised the profile of municipal officials and set an example for other public servants.
Greg Pettis was honored for his work founding the Democratic Municipal Officials California State Chapter, and for his civic leadership. He is the incoming President of the Southern California Association of Governments, immediate past Chairman of the Riverside County Transportation Commission and has lead the Coachella Valley’s efforts to bring passenger rail service to the desert – among other accomplishments and activities. “Greg Pettis is the type of leader all communities should elect. His focus is local, but he understands that in working nationally to share best practices, bring home resources, and develop skills, he can better serve his local community” explained Barbara Moore, DMO Executive Director As a constituency organization of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Democratic Municipal Officials (DMO) is the Democratic voice in local politics and the local voice in Democratic politics.
