Berkeley, California - The Golden Bear has taken on a distinct greenish tinge this week. First there was the announcement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference outside Paris that the University of California is the sole university participant in Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Coalition, a conglomerate of investors dedicated to developing low-carbon energy sources. UC will dedicate $1.25 billion to the venture over the next five years. “As a public research institution, we take the imperative to solve global climate change very seriously.”

Los Angeles, California - Federal authorities Thursday, arrested 11 defendants named in a sweeping racketeering indictment alleging a series of money laundering schemes that revolved around the former head of Saigon National Bank, based in Westminster, California, announced Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker of the Central District of California.  Four other defendants, who are named in separate indictments, were also arrested today.

Twentynine Palms, California - Joshua Tree National Park- Current artist-in-residence, Kim Zitzow will discuss methodology and research with respect to her current project at Joshua Tree National Park. The artist constructs archives involving a variety of sources ranging from historic documents to photographs to interviews that take place across a variety of media. She uses the format of archives to tell stories. Zitzow says from her artistic perspective, "the archive is as much a repository as it is a performative process, a living, changeable thing".

Sacramento, California - The Bureau of Reclamation has released the final environmental document for the Upper Truckee River and Marsh Restoration Project in El Dorado County, California.
