Virulent Newcastle Disease outreach in Southern California

Virulent Newcastle Disease has been detected in San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties. The disease has been found at a total of 74 properties – all residential. It has not been detected at commercial poultry operations. In this video, USDA veterinarian Dr. P. Ryan Clarke discusses the current incident with a review of the disease outbreak in 2002-2003 in California.

When used judiciously, antimicrobials can effectively fight bacterial infections. However, we know that overuse or misuse of these drugs promotes the development of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.

El Centro, California - On July 30th shortly before 9 PM, officers from the El Centro police department responded to the area of 7th and State to a report of an unconscious man near a bus stop bench covered in blood. Officers arrived on scene and found an adult male that was stabbed multiple times on his lower body. The victim, a homeless resident of Imperial Valley, was transported via ambulance to El Centro Regional Medical center and then to a San Diego area hospital for treatment.
