Efforts to Address Burma's Rakhine State Crisis

Washington, DC - Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson: "I visited Naypyitaw, Burma on November 15, where I met separately with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. I reaffirmed the United States’ strong commitment to Burma’s successful democratic transition as the elected government strives to implement reforms, bring peace and reconciliation to the nation, and resolve a devastating crisis in Rakhine State. Our first priority is to relieve the intolerable suffering faced by so many. In response to the dire situation, I announced last week an additional $47 million in humanitarian assistance for those affected by the Rakhine State crisis, bringing the total amount spent in response to this crisis to more than $87 million since August of this year.

Biologists Release Endangered California Butterfly Larvae into Native Habitat

San Diego, California - A team of wildlife biologists from the San Diego Zoo, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the Conservation Biology Institute released more than 1,700 larvae of the endangered Quino checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha quino) within its native range on the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017. This is the second round of captive-rearing and release efforts for this California and Northern Baja California native butterfly species, whose population has been in drastic decline over the last decade.

On November 9, 2017, the domestic panel reached an important milestone when the judges formally concluded their investigation and brought charges against more than 14 suspects.
