Washington, DC - Secretary of State John Kerry: "On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Uruguay as you celebrate the 190th anniversary of your nation’s independence on August 25.

"Just as Uruguay’s declaration of independence was an inspiration to the region, its democracy today continues to develop, adapt, and respond to today’s modern challenges. The United States and Uruguay’s commitment to human rights, our mutual appreciation for the values of freedom and democracy, and our belief in expanding opportunity for all help shape and define our strong relationship. Uruguay is a partner and leader in upholding our shared values regionally and globally.

"The United States is proud to work with Uruguay on a range of issues from peacekeeping to democracy promotion, as well as our joint endeavors to promote trade and educational exchange between our countries. We wish the Uruguayan people a happy Independence Day and a prosperous year. We look forward to continuing to deepen our partnership in the years to come."
