San Diego, California - In a state known for its diverse, trendsetting economy, the San Diego Zoo has earned a place on Forbes’ inaugural list of “America’s Best-in-State Employers 2019”—ranking 18th on the list of employers in California.

“Our entire organization is motivated by a core mission of conservation and education, focused across the world,” said Aida Rosa, chief human resources officer, San Diego Zoo Global. “It’s quite an honor to be recognized as one of the best employers in California, by our employees and other employees. It is a testament to the value we place on the knowledge and skills of our workforce, as well as their dedication to the work we do, day in and day out.”

The survey rankings, announced last month, are based on an independent survey conducted by Forbes and partner market research company Statista. To develop the list, Statista anonymously surveyed 80,000 Americans working for employers with at least 500 employees. Respondents rated how likely they would be to recommend their employer to others, in addition to nominating organizations in industries outside their own. The number of businesses ranked in each state was dependent on both the number of qualifying employers and the size of the state’s workforce.

San Diego Zoo Global employs 3,200 people at four locations: the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, and an off-site warehouse facility. Positions include a wide range of careers, from animal care specialists to research scientists, educators, building and grounds attendants, retail employees, operations staff, marketing professionals, and more—all working toward one mission: San Diego Zoo Global is committed to saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature.

The San Diego Zoo is globally recognized and a San Diego icon, hosting close to 4 million guests each year. At the San Diego Zoo, visitors can watch penguins and sharks swim, observe the behavior of century-old Galápagos tortoises, enjoy the beauty of exotic orchids, marvel at the koalas, explore walkthrough aviaries filled with the songs and colors of rare birds, and appreciate the power of leopards and jaguars. The San Diego Zoo is also accredited by the American Association of Museums as a Botanical Garden. As visitors discover the rare and endangered species at the San Diego Zoo, they are directly contributing, through admission and on-grounds sales, to the efforts of San Diego Zoo Global, an international nonprofit conservation organization that works to fight extinction through recovery efforts for plants and animals worldwide.
