Boulder, Colorado - Southern Californians and writers love to blame the hot, dry Santa Ana winds for tense, ugly moods, and the winds have long been associated with destructive wildfires. Now, NOAA researchers have found that on occasion, the winds have an accomplice with respect to fires, at least: Natural atmospheric events known as stratospheric intrusions, which bring extremely dry air from the upper atmosphere down to the surface, adding to the fire danger effects of the Santa Anas, and exacerbating some air pollution episodes.

Fresno, California - Following arrests made Thursday, a federal indictment was unsealed charging three defendants with conspiracy to commit health care fraud and 15 counts of health care fraud, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

Sacramento, California - The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have confirmed detection of the citrus disease known as huanglongbing (HLB), or citrus greening. The disease was detected in plant material taken from a kumquat tree in a residential neighborhood in the San Gabriel area of Los Angeles County.

Yosemite, California - Yosemite National Park is restoring the federally endangered Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog to alpine lakes within the park. The yellow-legged frog was once the most common frog in mountain lakes throughout the Sierra Nevada, but introduced predators and diseases caused their population to decline by over 95 percent. Park experts are encouraged by the results of initial restoration efforts and estimate that the population in Yosemite could become self-sustaining within the next ten years.

Sacramento, California - The State Senate Committee on Finance and Governance passed Assembly Bill 515 relating to a food bank tax credit.  This bill would increase access to healthier foods to food banks and low-income Californians by offering California agricultural producers a 20 percent tax credit for the wholesale value of foods donated to local food banks. AB 515 is being authored by Assemblymember Susana Talamantes Eggman and co-authored by local Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella).
