Record Number of IPR Seizures in FY17 for CBP, ICE

Washington, DC - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seized a record number of 34,143 shipments of goods that violated Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in FY2017. IPR seizures increased 8 percent over FY2016 and for the second year in a row, CBP and ICE seized more than 30,000 shipments of counterfeit and pirated products. The total estimated manufacturers’ suggested retail price (MSRP) would have been $1.2 billion had the products been genuine.

Confiscated Tiger Cub Undergoes Emergency Surgery

Escondido, California - Moka, a young male Bengal tiger cub that had been brought to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park last August by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers, underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday. The cub, which has been closely monitored by animal care staff since his arrival, recently began showing increased signs of ill health; and imaging studies indicated a serious health concern arising from intestinal adhesions. A specialist was called in, and an emergency surgery was performed to correct the malformations.
