Justice Department Sues to Stop Attorney From Promoting Nationwide Charitable Giving Tax Scheme

Washington, DC - The United States filed a civil complaint seeking to permanently bar Michael L. Meyer, of Southwest Ranches, Florida, from providing federal tax advice for compensation because Meyer allegedly promotes, organizes, and executes a national charitable giving tax scheme that has cost the United States Treasury more than $35 million. The complaint alleges that Meyer executes his scheme through three bogus charities that he controls. The United States also seeks to disgorge the fees that Meyer received from the scheme.

Washington, DC - An Alabama man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for producing child pornography between 1997 and 1998, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General John P. Cronan of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town of the Northern District of Alabama.
Justice Department Files Lawsuit to Invalidate New California Law Restricting Federal Land Sales

Sacramento, California - The U.S. Department of Justice filed a civil action in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California against the State of California, Governor of California Edmund G. “Jerry” Brown Jr., and the California State Lands Commission, seeking a declaration that California Senate Bill 50 (“SB 50”), enacted in October 2017, is unconstitutional and seeking an injunction against implementation of this state law. This California law purports to give a state agency the power to block the sale, donation or exchange of federal lands by the federal government to any other person or entity. SB 50 also seeks to penalize (up to $5,000) any person who knowingly files real estate records pertaining to a federal land transfer unless the California government certifies that the transfer complies with state law.
