Final deadline approaching for Census of Agriculture

Sacramento, California - The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is reminding farmers and ranchers that the window is closing on the opportunity to participate in the 2017 Census of Agriculture. To date, NASS has received more than 1.5 million completed questionnaires. But the national return rate is currently lower than at this point in the 2012 Census. NASS is encouraging U.S. producers who have not returned their completed Census questionnaires to do so as soon as possible. As the absolute deadline of July 31 draws nearer, NASS will turn to increased phone and in-person follow-up.
Department of Energy Announces $19 Million for Advanced Battery and Electrification Research to Enable Extreme Fast Charging

Washington, DC - Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $19 million to support twelve new cost-shared research projects focused on batteries and vehicle electrification technologies to enable extreme fast charging. Selected research projects are focused on developing electric vehicle systems that can recharge rapidly at high power levels, decreasing typical charge times to 15 minutes or less using a connector or wireless fast charging system.
Patient Advocacy and Health Care Provider Groups Urge California Legislators to Ensure Better Care for Californians with Diabetes

Sacramento, California - Thursday, a coalition of four leading patient advocacy and health care provider organizations, including the American Diabetes Association (ADA), presented testimony to California lawmakers urging them to ensure people with diabetes who receive their health care coverage from Medi-Cal have access to the life-saving medical technology known as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). The groups shared the importance of CGM technology CGMs provide critical information needed to more effectively manage diabetes, thus, improving health outcomes and helping to prevent life-threatening complications of diabetes such as cardiovascular and kidney disease.
American Diabetes Association® and American Psychological Association Announce First-Ever Directory of Mental Health Professionals with Specific Knowledge About Diabetes

Washington, DC - Acknowledging the complex environmental, social, behavioral and emotional issues known as psychosocial factors, that impact people with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) partnered to build the ADA-APA Mental Health Provider Diabetes Education Program to prepare mental health providers with the knowledge and tools to treat these unique mental health challenges. The first professionals to complete the program in 2017, totaling more than 100, are now listed in The Mental Health Provider Referral Directory (Directory), a publicly accessible, online database launched this month.
The American Diabetes Association® Encourages Everyone to Get Up and Get Moving on May 2 for National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day

Arlington, Virginia - The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is calling on people across the country to get moving in honor of its fourth annual National Get Fit Don’t Sit DayTM on May 2. Celebrated each year on the first Wednesday in May, National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day aims to increase awareness of the dangers of prolonged sitting and the importance of moving more throughout the day. The ADA’s 2018 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes recommend breaking up sedentary time with three or more minutes of physical activity such as walking, leg extensions or overhead arm stretches every 30 minutes for improved health outcomes in addition to getting the recommended 30 minutes a day, five days per week, of moderate exercise. Regular physical activity reduces the risk for type 2 diabetes and helps people with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes manage blood glucose.
