Washington, DC - Noah Joshua Phillips, Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, and Rohit Chopra were sworn in today as FTC Commissioners. President Trump named Phillips, a Republican, to a term that expires September 25, 2023; Slaughter, a Democrat, to a term that expires September 25, 2022; and Chopra, a Democrat, to a term that expires September 25, 2019.
Cigarette Companies to Post Court-Ordered Statements in Tobacco Racketeering Suit on Company Websites and Cigarette Packages

Washington, DC - Monday, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia entered a consent order requiring the country’s major cigarette companies to begin posting “corrective statements” on their websites starting on Monday, June 18. The order, part of a long-running lawsuit against the cigarette companies, also requires them to attach the same statements to cigarette packages for two weeks at a time, for a total of twelve weeks over two years. The order will also apply to any social media campaigns by the companies to promote cigarettes.
Justice Department Announces First Criminal Illegal Entry Prosecutions of Suspected Caravan Members

San Diego, California - The Department of Justice Monday filed criminal charges against eleven different suspected members of the so-called “caravan” in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, announced Attorney General Jeff Sessions and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California Adam Braverman. All defendants are alleged to have illegally entered the country in violation of 8 U.S.C § 1325, and one defendant is also alleged to have been previously deported and was charged with 8 U.S.C § 1326 (illegal reentry).

Hearing aids can be pricey though and aren’t covered by traditional Medicare or most insurance. Three related Florida businesses stepped into the marketplace with MSA 30X, a device advertised on TV and elsewhere with the promise that it was “independently tested to help you hear up to 30 times better.” But according to the FTC, the defendants amped up their claims well beyond what they could prove.
