Washington, DC - The United States and Cuba held the seventh Bilateral Commission meeting in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, June 14. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs John Creamer led the U.S. delegation. The Cuban delegation was led by Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, the Foreign Ministry’s Director General for U.S. Affairs.

Quito, Ecuador - The United States and Europol convened the Law Enforcement Coordination Group (LECG) on countering Hizballah’s Terrorist and Illicit Activities on June 13-14 in Quito, Ecuador. This session was also held under the auspices of Ameripol, with a number of its members participating.

Washington, DC - We are deeply concerned by reports that Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has been arrested again. Ms. Sotoudeh was reportedly arrested today at her home and taken to Evin Prison, the notorious prison the U.S. Department of Treasury designated last month in connection with its involvement in the Government of Iran’s human rights abuses. Ms. Sotoudeh most recently represented women unjustly detained for protesting Iran’s mandatory hijab law.

Washington, DC - Operators of a get-rich-quick scheme have agreed to a permanent ban on marketing or selling certain types of software as part of settlements with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations that the defendants deceived consumers by falsely claiming they could earn big money working online by using products marketed as “secret codes.”

Department of Energy Selects University of Utah Site for $140 Million Geothermal Research and Development

Washington, DC - Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that the University of Utah will receive up to $140 million in continued funding over the next five years for cutting-edge geothermal research and development. After three years of planning, site characterization, and competition, the proposed site outside of Milford, Utah, has been selected as the location of the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) field laboratory. This new FORGE site is dedicated to research on enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), or manmade geothermal reservoirs.
