Wildlife Conservation Board Funds Environmental Improvement and Acquisition Projects

Sacramento, California - At its May 22 quarterly meeting, the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) approved approximately $15 million in grants to help restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat throughout California. Some of the 21 approved projects will benefit fish and wildlife — including some endangered species — while others will provide public access to important natural resources. Several projects will also demonstrate the importance of protecting working landscapes that integrate economic, social and environmental stewardship practices beneficial to the environment, landowners and the local community.

Sacramento, California - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra Friday, as part of a coalition of 52 attorneys general, sent a letter urging the Department of Education (Department) to discharge the student loans of tens of thousands of veterans who were disabled as part of their service. In the letter, the coalition asks the Department to develop an automatic discharge program to ensure that all eligible veterans can have their student loans forgiven, rather than requiring these veterans to take affirmative steps to seek loan forgiveness – an approach that that has proven ineffective.

Sacramento, California - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, as part of a coalition of 16 states and four state environmental agencies, Friday filed a comment letter warning the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that any attempt to roll back state oversight of federal projects under Section 401 of the Clean Water Act (CWA) would be unlawful. The letter responds to the EPA’s request for recommendations to revise existing guidance and regulations implementing Section 401. The statute preserves states’ authority to protect the quality of the waters within their borders. The EPA’s invitation begins the implementation of President Trump’s April 2019 Executive Order issued to undermine state authority recognized under the CWA.

Los Angeles, California - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the arrest of ten individuals for allegedly using fraudulent information on credit applications to purchase vehicles from various car dealerships located in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, and San Bernardino Counties. After purchasing vehicles using false or stolen identities, the defendants would then file fraudulent documents with the California Department of Motor Vehicles to remove lienholders and obtain a “clean title” to the vehicles. The vehicles were then sold on Craigslist or to used car dealers. The complaint was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Attorney General Becerra Announces Sentencings in $2 Million Mortgage Fraud Scheme in Southern California

San Diego, California - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the sentencing of Andrew Valles for operating a $2 million mortgage fraud scheme throughout Southern California. Today, Mr. Valles was sentenced to 13 years in state prison. Restitution was ordered in the amount of $2,342,957. Co-defendant Arnold Millman was previously sentenced to a state prison term of three years and four months.
