CDC Is Deactivating the Emergency Operations Center for the Zika Response

Washington, DC - CDC is deactivating its emergency response for Zika virus (Zika) to transition efforts to normal program operations on September 29, 2017. On January 22, 2016, CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in response to the devastating effects of Zika virus infection during pregnancy. A team of experts from across the agency, called the Zika Coordination and Operations Transition Team (ZCOTT), will lead the transition from EOC activation to routine, long-term activities and will ensure timely coordination and collaboration on scientific, communication, and policy activities.

San Diego, California - Young patients, their families and invited guests were treated to a visit with some amazing animal ambassadors—including a bateleur eagle, a chinchilla and giant Flemish rabbits from the Saint Louis Zoo at a gathering at Mercy Children’s Hospital. This special event served to announce the arrival of a closed-circuit television adventure channel, San Diego Zoo Kids, at Mercy Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.

San Francisco, California - Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed into law today 15 bills to help increase the supply and affordability of housing in California. The measures provide funding for affordable housing, reduce regulations, boost construction and strengthen existing housing laws.
October Means Kids Are Free at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park

San Diego, California - October is coming and that means kids are free all month long at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Kids Free presented by Mission Fed is an annual event that offers free Zoo and Safari Park admission for children ages 11 and younger, when they are accompanied by an adult. There will also be special weekend activities at both facilities, including extra treats for the animals in the form of pumpkins and festive gourds some stuffed with “goodies” and others just given “au naturel” for the animals to gnaw on, bite, bash and enjoy. Special keeper talks are also scheduled, with interesting information and fascinating stories about Zoo and Safari Park animals from the animal care experts who know them best.
