Sacramento, California - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued a statement on the World Health Organization’s announcement that it is increasing the pandemic alert from level 4 to 5:

“From the moment the first cases of swine flu arose in California, my administration has responded vigorously by deploying resources and preparing for the additional cases of swine flu that we are now seeing. We are already taking the steps that are appropriate for a level 5 pandemic alert. As our medical community has ramped up its monitoring of the virus, we expected to see more cases, and Californians should rest assured that we are prepared for this increase and also for the likelihood that we may see more severe cases. This has the attention of our very best scientists and public health officials who have been preparing for this type of situation for years. While swine flu patients in California have had only mild to moderate illness, strong action is needed by every single one of us to limit the spread of the virus and minimize the impact on people’s health.”

Earlier today, the Governor directed each state agency secretary to notify their respective employees of their responsibilities in helping to prevent the spread of swine flu, including staying home when sick with flu-like symptoms and limiting contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Yesterday, the Governor issued a proclamation to cut red tape and ensure all state health departments’ can quickly obtain any materials, personnel or equipment they may need. This action follows the Governor’s rigorous response from the first case of swine flu that was confirmed in California, which has included deploying public health experts across the state, increasing surveillance of patients with flu-like illness and activating the joint emergency operations center and health alert network. In addition, state health officials are working closely with the federal government and our local health partners to provide guidance on measures that can be helpful in reducing the virus’ spread and associated impact on health.

The Governor continues to urge all Californians to be diligent in preventing the further spread of the flu:

  • If you get sick with flu, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
