Imperial, California - The economic recession has forced many Americans to cut back on everything from travel to groceries. Even large pharmaceutical companies have noticed the shift in consumer behavior. In the fall of 2008, Pfizer, the maker of Lipitor, the world's most-prescribed drug, reported a 13 percent drop in sales in its third quarter.
Due to the high prices of many prescriptions, consumers have taken matters into their own hands by resorting to dangerous acts when it comes to their medications. Some people are stretching out their medications by taking half of the prescribed doses or by taking their medications every other day. Others stop taking their prescriptions completely. Most patients who change their medication schedules to save money do so without consulting their doctors, putting their health and lives at risk. Consumers who are feeling the pressures of the poor economy do not need to forfeit life-saving medications in order to stretch their budgets. A new Web site, BidRx.com, is helping Americans find the most affordable deals on prescription medications. Similar to LendingTree and Expedia, BidRx.com lets pharmacies compete for your business. As a result, the consumer sees substantially lower prescription prices. Through the Internet, the consumer simply logs onto the Web site, then inputs the name and the prescribed dose of their medication into a form. Instantly, BidRx allows users to see the maximum price that is offered for their chosen drug. In addition, the site also lists possible alternatives to the medication, which may have the same or similar characteristics -; but at a cheaper price. Next, the consumer creates an auction for their chosen medication, then sits back while the bids are collected. Users of the site can then choose the pharmacy that offers their chosen prescription at the most affordable price with the best services. BidRx includes shipping prices, so consumers can choose to have their prescriptions filled by in-state or out-of-state pharmacies. If a patient notices that the site's similar medication recommendations are more affordable than the prescription that they are currently taking, they can print the list, take it to their doctor and ask if it is possible to make the switch to the cheaper medicine. Many physicians, if they understand their patients' financial woes, are willing to work to develop less-expensive treatment plans -; possibly saving hundreds of dollars per prescription.
