San Diego Chargers sign former San Diego State quarterback Kevin O'Connell

San Diego, California - The Chargers have signed former San Diego State quarterback Kevin O’Connell to a one-year contract.

O’Connell, 6-5, 225, was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2008. He spent the ’08 season with the Patriots and the 2009-11 seasons with the New York Jets. O’Connell appeared in just two games, both with the Patriots during the ’08 season when he completed four of six pass attempts for 23 yards.

O’Connell was born in Knoxville, Tenn., but he went to High School at La Costa Canyon in Carlsbad, Calif., just north of San Diego. He continued his football career at San Diego State where he was a four-time team captain and a second-team All-Mountain West Conference pick as a senior. O’Connell finished his career at SDSU with 664 completions in 1,151 attempts (57.7%) for 7,689 yards, 46 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. His combined total offense figure of 9,001 yards was the second highest in school history, while his 7,689 passing yards ranked third and his 46 touchdowns ranked fourth.
