Sacramento, California - CDFA’s Fertilizer Research and Education Program (FREP) and the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR) are offering nitrogen management training and certification for certified crop advisers (CCAs). In early 2015, the training will take place in three locations in California and is open to CCAs who did not attend the nitrogen management training program in 2014.

The goal of the program is to facilitate CCAs’ understanding of nitrogen management practices and increase their ability to make informed recommendations to growers, thereby improving environmental performance relative to nitrogen management for crop production. Developed by subject matter experts, the curriculum will address the management of nitrates in soil-plant systems to reduce unintentional leakage into waters throughout the state, while emphasizing the economic and environmental benefits achieved through improved management of agricultural use of nitrogen and irrigation water.

Each training session will take two days. The first day is a general session with presentations on the nitrogen cycle in crop production systems, nitrogen sources, irrigation and nitrogen management, and nitrogen budgeting. The second morning will have concurrent sessions on annual and permanent crops and will include nitrogen planning practices.

Three two-day sessions are scheduled from January 2015 through March 2015. Please see below for dates and locations.
