Imperial, California - The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors, Tuesday, finalized new boundaries for its five electoral divisions within its water service area.

The boundary changes are in line with the public’s adoption of a measure, passed during the November 2014 election, which requires that IID conduct future elections for its publicly elected board of directors by division, rather than districtwide.

Each board member will be elected from the division in which he or she resides by the voters of that division. The boundary changes will be presented to the county registrar of voters before the Dec. 9 deadline, qualifying for the June 2016 primary election.

The board’s approval followed public input, suggestions and modifications as the map was designed to make each division reflect about the same population and ensure that racial, ethnic and language minority voters have an equal opportunity to participate in the political process.

The new map simplifies boundaries and lowers population differences between divisions by removing portions of Brawley from Division 1 and moving the northern boundary of Division 1 to include Westmorland to increase deference to the political boundaries of the region.

Divisions 2 and 4 will be up for election in June 2016.
