Washington, DC - Have you done your homework on Ed Tech? The FTC and the Department of Education have published the agenda for their joint Student Privacy and Ed Tech workshop scheduled for Friday, December 1, 2017.

After opening remarks at 9:00 ET from Acting FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Thomas B. Pahl, the first panel will set the stage with presentations by (among others) staff from the FTC and the Department of Education. What’s the current state of the technology? How does it implicate laws like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)?

Panel 2 will take attendees back to the classroom. Speakers include a school district Technology Director, another district’s Executive Director for Data Security, and other experts with job titles unimagined by earlier generations of educators.

Panel 3 will feature a candid conversation about student privacy. Panelists will present their perspectives on the challenges that parents, teachers, school administrators, advocates, and industry members face in bringing the benefits of Ed Tech into the classroom while properly protecting students’ privacy.

Panel 4 assigns homework: Where do we go from here and what additional issues are innovative technologies likely to pose? Kathleen Styles, Chief Privacy Office of the Department of Education, will present closing remarks.

Registration begins at 8:00 AM ET on December 1st, at the FTC’s Constitution Center, 400 7th Street, S.W., in Washington, DC. The workshop is free and open to the public. You also can watch the webcast from a link we’ll post that morning.
