Memphis, Tennessee - Your business doesn’t have to be big to be bold. Does your small business pack a punch? Have you turned heads - and a profit? Have you made a difference in your community or communities across the globe?

Enter the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest from now until Feb. 9 and you could win one of 10 grants of up to $25,000:
- 1 grand prize winner will receive $25,000.
- 4 first-place winners will each receive $5,000.
- 5 second-place winners will each receive $1,000.
Putting grant money to work
As a small-business owner, you know everything you do adds up. Imagine how much you could accomplish with an infusion of cash.
Nicole Snow, owner of Darn Good Yarn and last year’s grand prize winner, used her windfall to add more products to her line and hire more women in India and Nepal.
“My business takes materials that would otherwise be thrown out in India and Nepal, and I have them made into yarn,” Snow says. “It helps so many people who are really impoverished and living on less than two dollars a day. It’s a way for people to earn money making something with their own hands.”
Since winning the grant money and expanding her product line, Snow’s business has grown 60 percent.
The proof is in the numbers
Running a business is no small feat — but the results are critical to the U.S. economy.
Last June, in honor of the 50th anniversary of National Small Business Week, BusinessInsider.com ran the numbers and found just how valuable businesses like yours are:
- Small businesses employ 57 percent of the country’s private workforce.
- Small businesses pay 44 percent of U.S. payroll.
- Small businesses create 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting companies.
We want to do our part in helping small businesses grow, because we understand the value you bring to your communities, the U.S. economy and sometimes, as in the case of Darn Good Yarn, across the world.

On Feb. 26, we’ll announce the top 100 finalists chosen to move on to the second round of the contest.
In the second round, we’ll ask three questions — you decide which one to answer. This short essay will help us really get to know you and what makes your business remarkable. We’ll review every submission to identify the most compelling business stories. Round-two essays must be submitted by March 12.
We’ll announce the winners on March 24.
