San Felipe Shrimp Festival

Baja California, Mexico - Baja California tourism welcomes visitors to the 20th annual San Felipe Shrimp Festival November 2-4, 2012. This year’s event, organized by Mexicali Tourism Committee, includes famous guest chefs and special hotel rates and promotions during the weekend. San Felipe, the “gateway to the Sea of Cortez,” is renowned as the shrimp capital of Baja California, Mexico, where giant, blue shrimp naturally grow in its gorgeous blue waters.

Guests will sample delicious culinary aspects of the famed blue shrimp and celebrate the lifestyle of the San Felipe fisherman at the three-day event. Cultural events, entertainment, wine and tequila tastings, and local and regional folk artists will also entertain visitors.

 

Headlining this year’s festival are guest cooking demos by Javier Plascencia Friday at 7 p.m., Benito Molina and Solange Muris, Saturday at 3 p.m., Esteban Lluis Saturday at 9 p.m., and Juan Eumir Sunday at 3 p.m. Local chefs will also participate in cook-offs on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., where they will present their best shrimp recipes to a panel of these renowned chefs. The judging panel will name the 20th annual event’s best shrimp recipe at the conclusion of the festival.

 

The family-friendly festival also offers entertainment for all ages with carnival rides for children and winery and tequila tastings for adults. Attendees can also experience the culture of Mexico at a Mexican-style rodeo, while local artists and crafters will showcase their finest artwork, all handcrafted in Baja California. Additionally, bands from both the U.S. and Baja California will offer performances in a variety of musical genres.

“It’s an exciting year as we celebrate 20 years of San Felipe’s famous blue shrimp and special guest chefs from Baja California showcase their best recipes in a cook-off,” said Baja California State Tourism Secretary Juan Tintos Funcke. “We welcome visitors to the best shrimp event of Baja.”

San Felipe is located 120 miles south of Mexicali on Highway 5. The Shrimp Festival takes place on Friday, Nov. 2 from 6 p.m. - 2 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 3 from noon - 1:30 a.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4 from noon - 11 p.m. Entry into the event is free, attendees pay per sample.
