Calexico, California - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico station apprehended a convicted sex offender early this morning in a populated area in Calexico.
The incident occurred east of the Calexico West Port of Entry, at approximately 12:45 a.m., when agents encountered a 30-year-old male citizen of Mexico attempting to illegally enter the United States.
Border Patrol agents identified the man as Walter Inzunza Cervantes, a convicted sex offender, guilty of sexual battery in Riverside. He was sentenced to serve 123 days in jail. Inzunza failed to register as a sex offender and was later sentenced to serve additional days in jail. The sex offender was removed from the United States in December 2013.
The convicted sex offender is being held by the U.S. Border Patrol and will be prosecuted for re-entry after deportation.
