Alpine, California - In 2012, Jimmy A. Arevalo was killed in a tragic accident along Interstate 8. Arevalo had pulled over to help another driver on the side of the road, when both were struck and killed by a drunk driver.
Born and raised in Imperial County, Arevalo dedicated his life to educating and serving others. He was a teacher in the Calexico school district for over three decades, an adjunct instructor in the English Department at Imperial Valley College, and a migrant education principal for the Heber Migrant Summer School Program at the Imperial County Office of Education. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Silvia, their sons Bernardo and Roberto, and their daughter Lupita.
In 2013, at the request of Arevalo’s family, Assemblymembers Jones and Pérez jointly authored Assembly Concurrent Resolution 51, which designates a portion of State Highway Route 8 near the location of the accident as the “Jimmy A. Arevalo Memorial Highway.” Friends and family will be gathering on Saturday for the dedication ceremony. The general public and members of the media are invited to attend.
