El Centro Sector Border Patrol Halts Smuggling Attempt of Nearly $500,000 of Narcotics at Checkpoint

Salton City, California - El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a suspected narcotics smuggler and seized more than 26 pounds of methamphetamine and 17 pounds of cocaine, concealed in an aftermarket compartment.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m., when Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station encountered a 1994 Plymouth Voyager as it approached the Highway 86 checkpoint. The driver was a 24-year-old man, and citizen of Mexico, legally in the country.
A Border Patrol Canine Detection team screened the vehicle. The canine alerted, and agents referred the driver to secondary for a more thorough inspection. During the inspection, agents discovered several wrapped packages of methamphetamine, weighing 26.45 pounds worth an estimated $317,400. During further inspection of the vehicle, agents discovered several wrapped packages of cocaine, weighing 17.91 pounds worth an estimated $179,100.
Border Patrol agents turned the man, narcotics, and vehicle over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
