Salton City, California - On Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents from the El Centro Sector assigned to the Indio Station arrested a suspected narcotics smuggler and seized more than 34 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in a compartment within the vehicle.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m., when CBP agents encountered a 44-year-old man driving a gray 1994 Jeep Cherokee as he approached the Highway 86 checkpoint located between Westmorland and Salton City. A Border Patrol Canine Detection team alerted to the vehicle and the driver was referred to secondary for further inspection. During the inspection agents discovered 32 individually wrapped packages of methamphetamine hidden inside the vehicle’s headliner area.
The methamphetamines had a combined weight of 34.9 pounds with an estimated street value of $670,080.
The suspected smuggler, a United States citizen, was taken into custody. The man, vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
