Calexico, California - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Andrade and Calexico ports of entry over the weekend made three significant narcotic seizures worth over a half million dollars.
The latest seizure occurred yesterday morning, Tuesday, October 9, at about 2:00 a.m. at the Calexico downtown port of entry when a CBP officer conducting inspections of vehicles and travelers referred a 2006 gold Pontiac G6 for further inspection.
CBP officers and a canine team conducted an intensive inspection on the vehicle. The canine alerted to the dashboard of the vehicle which led officers to the discovery of 44 wrapped packages of marijuana concealed inside a non-factory compartment. The marijuana weighed 89 pounds with a street value of approximately $53,400.
The driver, a 29-year-old male Mexican citizen and permanent resident of El Centro, California, was arrested for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt.
The largest seizure occurred on, Monday, October 8, at the Andrade port of entry when a CBP officer encountered a 53-year-old male U.S. citizen driving a white 1999 Dodge Ram utility truck. During the interview the CBP officer noticed the driver was nervous and pulled him aside for further examination.
An intensive inspection on the utility truck that included a canine screening and use of x-ray equipment led officers to the discovery of 28 wrapped packages of methamphetamine hidden inside a specially built compartment above the rear wheel wells. The methamphetamine weighed 29 pounds with a street value of approximately $435,000.
The driver, a resident of Brawley, California, was arrested for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt.
The third seizure occurred on Saturday, October 6, at about 12:40 p.m. at the Calexico downtown port when a CBP officer referred a 24-year-old female U.S. citizen driving a brown 1994 Ford Crown Victoria for further examination.
CBP officers used a canine team and x-ray equipment that led to the discovery of 24 wrapped packages of marijuana concealed inside metal canisters in all four tires of the vehicle. The weight of the narcotic was 91 pounds with a street value of approximately $54,600.
CBP officers arrested the driver, a resident of Compton, California, for the alleged smuggling attempt.
The subjects were turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for further processing. They were later transported to the Imperial County Jail where they await arraignment.
CBP officers in all three incidents seized the narcotics and vehicles.
