Washington, DC - In honor of Earth Day, the U.S. Department of State announced today that nine aquariums and other organizations have signed on to host Fishackathon events in their cities from June 5-7, leading up to World Oceans Day on June 8.

Last year’s inaugural Fishackathon took place in five cities across the United States. This year’s second annual Fishackathon has expanded internationally and will include events at the following sites:

Fishackathon is a public-private partnership launched by the Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships (S/GP) to use technology to create innovative solutions for the sustainable management of fisheries and the protection of our oceans.

The annual Fishackathon event calls on coders from all around the world to come together for a weekend of work to create new applications, tools, and prototypes that will be deployed on multiple platforms to help fishers work smarter and more safely in sustainable fishing. By connecting aquariums, universities, and technology communities in this venture, S/GP hopes to create a network of concerned citizens and institutions that can continue to collaborate to address a variety of issues on the topic.

S/GP has also extended the due date for submitting problem statements on specific challenges in sustainable fishing that the volunteer coders will address in the event. Problem statements can be submitted through the Fishackathon website.
