Chiriaco, California - Tuesday, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station arrested a suspected narcotics smuggler and seized more than nine pounds of narcotics concealed within a vehicle.
The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m., when Border Patrol agents stopped a 20-year-old man driving a blue 2000 Ford Explorer near Interstate 10 and Hayfield Road. A Border Patrol canine detection team alerted to the vehicle; the vehicle was transported to the Indio Station for further inspection.
During the inspection, agents discovered five vacuum-sealed packages of methamphetamine and heroin hidden within the fuel tank of the vehicle. The narcotics had a combined weight of 9.69 pounds with an estimated street value of $81,630.
The man, a Mexican national, the vehicle and the narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
