Sacramento, California - Building on the Administration’s efforts to make state government more efficient, the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) yesterday awarded 23 state officials across various agencies and departments certificates of completion for the Lean 6-Sigma training program administered by GO-Biz which helps streamline permitting and make state government more business friendly.

“GO-Biz is working to make state government more user friendly by incorporating efficiency measures developed by the private sector,” said Governor Brown’s senior advisor for jobs and business development Mike Rossi. “Ultimately, this helps businesses navigate the permitting and regulatory system more easily and improves California’s overall business climate.”

The graduation ceremony was hosted in the Governor’s Council Room by Governor Brown’s senior advisor for jobs and business development Mike Rossi and also included Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary, Anna Caballero; Transportation Agency Secretary, Brian Kelly; Department of Business Oversight Commissioner, Jan Lynn Owen; Department of General Services director Daniel Kim; and Alcohol and Beverage Control director Timothy Gorsuch.

The GO-Biz certification is not your typical state government training program. Lean 6-Sigma training has long been used by the world’s corporate leaders including Toyota, Motorola and General Electric to increase efficiency. In order to receive certification, participants must complete projects that have vastly improved the efficiency and operation of a number of processes within each department. The resulting improvements have a direct positive impact on governments’ interaction with the public by improving the customer service experience for businesses.

The complete list of graduates and more information on the projects can be found here.

Last year, GO-Biz partnered with the Government Operations Agency to offer Lean 6-Sigma Training to state agencies to specifically address process-based issues within state departments that were causing delays in services to both internal and external stakeholders. Over a 6 month period, participants received training on complex analytical and statistical tools that identify waste and inefficiencies in processes.
