Sacramento, California - Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the appointment of Jeffrey S. Brand and Thomas J. Nixon to judgeships in the Alameda County Superior Court.

Brand, 70, of Berkeley, has been a professor of law at the University of San Francisco School of Law since 1986, where he served as dean from 1999 to 2013. He was an attorney in private practice from 1980 to 1985 and 1974 to 1976. Brand served as an administrative law judge at the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board from 1976 to 1978 and as a deputy public defender at the Contra Costa County Public Defender’s Office from 1971 to 1974. He was co-founder and editor-in-chief at the Federal Litigator magazine from 1985 to 1995. Brand earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Gary M. Picetti. Brand is a Democrat.

Nixon, 56, of Dublin, has served as a commissioner at the Alameda County Superior Court since 2002. He was an attorney in private practice from 1998 to 2002, a partner at Quaresma, Benya, Hall, Connich, O’Hara and Nixon from 1989 to 1998 and an associate at Quaresma, Benya, Hall and Haun from 1984 to 1989. Nixon earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Santa Clara University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from San Jose State University. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Kenneth M. Burr. Nixon is a Democrat.

The compensation for each of these positions is $184,610.
