Senator Boxer Praises Judiciary Committee Approval of Two Talented California Judicial Nominees

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today praised the Senate Judiciary Committee for unanimously voting to approve Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell and Sacramento Superior Court Judge Troy Nunley to serve as U.S. District Court Judges for the Central and Eastern Districts of California, respectively.
Senator Boxer recommended Judge O’Connell to the White House after a thorough interview and vetting process by a bipartisan advisory committee. She was first nominated by President Obama in November.
“Judge O’Connell has decades of experience as a Superior Court judge, federal prosecutor and attorney in private practice, and she deserves to be swiftly confirmed by the Senate,” Senator Boxer said.
Senator Dianne Feinstein recommended Judge Nunley to the President. He was first nominated by the President in June and was previously approved by the Judiciary Committee in December.
“These are both outstanding judges who would serve in judicial emergency districts with some of the heaviest caseloads in the nation,” Senator Boxer said. “We owe it to the millions of Californians who live in these areas to confirm these talented nominees without delay.”
Judge O’Connell was first appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2005. She has served on the Superior Court’s Executive Committee, which is involved with new attorney orientation, community outreach programs and civic education programs. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles from 1995 to 2005, she helped lead high-profile criminal prosecutions, including cases that earned her awards of distinction from federal law enforcement officials. Judge O’Connell received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and earned her law degree from Pepperdine University School of Law, where she was the managing editor of the Pepperdine Law Review.
Judge Troy L. Nunley was first appointed to the Sacramento County Superior Court in 2002. He served as Deputy Attorney General in the California Attorney General’s office from 1999 to 2002. He served as Deputy District Attorney in Sacramento County from 1996 through 1999 following a two-year stint in private practice,. In 1990, Nunley served as Assistant District Attorney in Alameda County. Judge Nunley received his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California and his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
The Central District of California includes the counties of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange and Riverside. It is the most populous federal judicial district, with more than 18 million residents spread across 40,000 square miles.
The Eastern District of California stretches from the Oregon border in the north to the Tehachapis in the south and from the Coastal Range in the west to the Nevada border in the east. It has courts in Sacramento, Fresno, Yosemite, Redding, South Lake Tahoe and Bakersfield.
