Assemblyman Manuel Pérez Introduces Salton Sea Governance Bill

Sacramento, California - Today, Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez (D-Coachella) introduced a bill to ensure that local stakeholders have a voice in Salton Sea decision making.

AB 71 calls for a balanced approach to Salton Sea restoration decision making by requiring the Natural Resources Agency to work in consultation and coordination with the Salton Sea Authority (SSA). This bill forms a technical advisory group to guide restoration or economic development activities related to the Sea.  This bill further authorizes funding from the Salton Sea Restoration Fund for the SSA to prepare a restoration funding and feasibility study, to be undertaken in consultation with the Resources Agency and the technical advisory group.

AB 71 is the reintroduction of last year’s AB 1410, which was held in Senate Rules at the end of the 2012 legislative session.  AB 71 has been referred to Assembly Rules Committee, where it is awaiting assignment to the appropriate policy committee.
