Boxer Praises Senate Confirmation of Jesus Bernal for U.S. District Court in Riverside

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today praised the Senate’s confirmation of Jesus Bernal to serve as a U.S. District Court Judge in Riverside. Senator Boxer recommended Bernal’s nomination to the White House after a thorough interview and vetting process by a bipartisan advisory committee.

After today’s confirmation by voice vote, Bernal will become the only Latino District Court judge serving the Central District’s Eastern Division, which includes Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

“I am so pleased that the Senate has confirmed Jesus Bernal to the federal bench,” Senator Boxer said. “He has extensive experience handling complex criminal and civil cases and will be an outstanding addition to the Central District court in Riverside.”

Since July 2006, Bernal has served as the Directing Attorney of the Federal Public Defender’s Riverside office, where he has led a team of attorneys, investigators and other legal staff in representing indigent defendants in federal cases in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Bernal previously served as the Deputy Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California, working in the trial unit of the Los Angeles office where he developed significant courtroom experience and handled a wide range of criminal cases. As a litigation associate for Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe, he also gained expertise in commercial litigation, including federal and state securities actions, RICO, ERISA, federal trademark and copyright, account liability and other general business cases.

He graduated cum laude from Yale University and earned his law degree at Stanford Law School, where he co-chaired the Stanford Latino Law Students Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Bar Association’s Inland Empire chapter and has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Mexican American Bar Foundation.
