President Obama’s Executive Order issued today Regarding Immigration Reform Statement

Washington, DC - Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez (D-Coachella) issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s executive order issued today regarding immigration:

President Obama’s executive order is a victory for our state and national economies and for families throughout America.  It enables hard-working young people who were brought to our country as children to contribute to our economy and give back to society, openly and without fear.  It will have positive ramifications for the immigrant students in the Coachella and Imperial Valleys, and I believe it moves our society in the right direction.

I believe the President’s action affirms the policy work I have been pursuing to legitimize the economic contribution of unauthorized workers in our state.  It supports our contention that the President has executive authority to authorize policies absent congressional action and signals his willingness to think in creative, new ways.

The President’s executive order will apply to young adults no more than 30 years old, who arrived in the United States before age 16 and have lived here for five years. They must also have no criminal record, and have earned a high school diploma, be in school or have served in the military.
